The Heroic Defense of Veracruz is observed in Mexico every April 21 as a civic holiday, commemorating the defense of the city against the United States occupation in 1914 during the Mexican Revolution. The conflict arose after the Mexican government mistakenly arrested American sailors in Tampico, leading to US President Woodrow Wilson ordering the occupation of Veracruz. On April 21, American marines landed, while General Gustavo Maass ordered a retreat of Mexican troops; however, around 50 soldiers, along with cadets from the Veracruz National Academy and local citizens, chose to defend their city. Despite their resistance, US troops gained complete control by the evening of April 22. The occupation lasted until November 23, 1914. This holiday serves as a reminder of the events that unfolded and the valor displayed by those who defended Veracruz.
