Yom Ha’atzmaut, or Israel Independence Day, is observed in Israel on the 5th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. This holiday commemorates the Israeli Declaration of Independence proclaimed by David Ben-Gurion in 1948. Celebrations include an official ceremony on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, featuring speeches, the lighting of twelve torches representing the Tribes of Israel, and artistic performances. Public commemorations also include receptions honoring IDF soldiers and the Israel Prize ceremony. Families celebrate with barbecues and picnics, while many decorate their homes and vehicles with Israeli flags. The holiday is preceded by Yom Hazikaron, a day of remembrance for fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism. Although primarily a secular holiday, some religious communities may adjust their liturgy in its honor.
