Chuvash Language Day is observed annually on April 25 in the Chuvash Republic of the Russian Federation. Established in 1992 by the State Council of the Chuvash Republic, the day aims to emphasize the uniqueness of the Chuvash language and its endangered status. The Chuvash language, which developed from Middle Bulgar dialects in the 15th century, is the only surviving member of the Oghur language branch of the Turkic family. Celebrations primarily take place in Chuvash schools and universities, featuring seminars, lectures, exhibitions, and concerts that focus on Chuvash language, literature, and culture. The date also coincides with the birthday of Ivan Yakovlev, a key figure in the development of the modern Chuvash language and alphabet. Despite having over a million speakers, Chuvash is classified as an endangered language by UNESCO, highlighting the importance of revitalization efforts.
