National Poetry Day, also known as National Literature Day, is observed in Indonesia every April 28. This day commemorates the death anniversary of Chairil Anwar, a prominent poet of the 1945 Generation, who passed away in 1949. Anwar, recognized for his individualistic style and influence on modern Indonesian language, left behind over 90 literary works, including his celebrated poem "Aku." Although the day honors Anwar, it also celebrates all Indonesian poets, writers, and playwrights who have contributed to the national literature. While not a public holiday, various institutions such as schools and cultural centers engage in activities like poetry readings, writing contests, and awards ceremonies to promote literature and poetry.
