The Feast of the Virgin of Chapi is observed in Arequipa, Peru, every year from April 30 to May 2, with the most significant events taking place on May 1. This festival honors the Virgin of Chapi, the patroness of Arequipa, whose sanctuary is located in the Polobaya District, about 60 kilometers south of the provincial capital. The statue of the Virgin, believed to have been brought to Peru by missionaries in the 18th century, is associated with several miraculous legends, including one where it became immovable during an attempted relocation, leading to the construction of a shrine at that site. The festivities attract over two hundred thousand pilgrims who participate in special services, vibrant processions with the statue, concerts, and fireworks. Although the liturgical feast day is on February 2, devotees celebrate in May to honor the month traditionally dedicated to the Mother of God in the Catholic Church. Pilgrims often walk long distances to the temple, demonstrating their devotion.
