The International Day of the Portuguese Language and Culture, also known as Lusophone Culture Day, is observed on May 5 each year. This celebration was introduced by the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), which includes nine member states: Brazil, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Cape Verde, São Tomé and PrÃncipe, Timor-Leste, and Equatorial Guinea. The CPLP was established on July 17, 1996, to promote collaboration among Portuguese-speaking nations. On Lusophone Culture Day, various cultural events are organized to celebrate the Portuguese language and its diverse cultures. The day highlights the importance of the CPLP in fostering economic and democratic reforms in its member countries, particularly in Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and PrÃncipe. The observance takes place not only in the member countries but also in locations with significant Portuguese-speaking communities worldwide.
