Hıdırellez is a traditional spring festival observed in Turkey every May 6, celebrating the meeting of the prophets al-Khidr and Elijah. The festival's name is derived from a fusion of their names and is believed to have origins in pagan rituals marking the transition from winter to spring. Celebrations often take place in small towns and villages, where people clean and decorate their homes with flowers, anticipating a visit from al-Khidr, who is thought to bring hope and happiness. Typical customs include picnics by water sources, as it is believed that al-Khidr drank the water of life to achieve immortality. Festive meals often feature roasted lamb, and participants may write wishes on paper and toss them into rivers, believing their prayers will come true. Additionally, jumping over fires is a common ritual, believed to protect individuals from illness throughout the year. Hıdırellez is regarded as one of the most significant seasonal festivals in the Turkic world, with a blend of secular and religious significance, particularly among the Alevis.
