International Blue Iguana Day is observed worldwide every May 8. Established in 2021 by the Blue Iguana Conservation program run by the National Trust for the Cayman Islands, the day aims to highlight the endangered status of the blue iguana, a species endemic to Grand Cayman. The blue iguana, which can reach up to 5 feet in length, has seen its wild population decline significantly due to habitat destruction, vehicle collisions, and predation. The Blue Iguana Recovery Program, initiated in 1990, has been pivotal in restoring the population, leading to its reclassification from critically endangered to endangered by the IUCN. On this day, the Blue Iguana Conservation facility organizes events to educate the public and raise funds for conservation efforts, encouraging participation through donations, volunteering, and social media engagement using the hashtag #InternationalBlueIguanaDay.
