Shusha Liberation Day is observed in Armenia on May 9, commemorating the Battle of Shusha, which marked Armenia's first significant military victory during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. This day coincides with Victory and Peace Day, celebrating the surrender of Nazi Germany in World War II. The battle took place from May 8 to May 9, 1992, resulting in the capture of Shusha, a crucial Azerbaijani stronghold, which ended the siege of Stepanakert. Celebrations include wreath-laying ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Yerablur Military Pantheon in Yerevan, as well as public speeches and military parades in the Republic of Artsakh. The day is also recognized as the founding anniversary of the Artsakh Defense Army. However, following Azerbaijan's recapture of Shusha in 2020, there have been discussions within Armenian society about the future of this holiday.
