National Forest Planting Day is observed in Russia every second Saturday in May. Established in 2011 by the Federal Forestry Agency, this campaign was initiated as part of the United Nations’ International Year of Forests to promote the conservation and sustainable development of forests. The first event took place on May 14, 2011, where over 200,000 volunteers planted nearly 25 million saplings. This annual initiative, supported by the Russian government, highlights the importance of forest conservation, especially given that Russia holds the world’s largest forest reserve, which constitutes more than a fifth of the global forest area. While the event typically occurs in May, some regions may celebrate it later due to colder climates.
