May 12: Army Day (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Army Day is observed in the Republika Srpska on May 12 every year. This day commemorates the formation of the Army of the Republika Srpska, which was established on May 12, 1992, from remnants of the Yugoslav People's Army to protect the local population during the Bosnian War. The establishment of the army was supported by the heads of Bosnia and Herzegovina following the outbreak of conflict, allowing the troops to retain heavy weapons that became the backbone of the new military force. Although the Army of the Republika Srpska ceased to exist in 2006 when it was integrated into the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the anniversary of its formation continues to be observed. This day reflects the aspirations of some for independence and the potential renewal of armed forces in the region.
