Feast of Ascension: Father’s Day (Germany)

Father's Day in Germany, known as Vatertag, is observed every year on the Feast of Ascension, which falls on a Thursday. This holiday is also referred to regionally as Men's Day or Gentlemen's Day. Traditionally, groups of men engage in hiking tours, primarily for the purpose of consuming alcohol, often using small carts or wheelbarrows to carry drinks such as beer and wine. The custom likely traces back to 18th-century processions in rural areas, where men were transported in wooden carts to the town square for recognition by the mayor. By the late 19th century, the celebration shifted away from its religious roots, focusing more on outdoor excursions with food and drink. In 1934, the Feast of Ascension was declared a public holiday in Germany, allowing many to enjoy an extended weekend.
