The Day of Customs and Traditions is observed in Burkina Faso every May 15. Established in 2022 following a coup d'état, this public holiday aims to reaffirm the secular nature of the state while promoting the integration of traditional religions into society. It celebrates the country's diverse cultural heritage, acknowledging the important role of traditional beliefs alongside Islam and Christianity, which are the predominant religions in the nation. The holiday was created by the interim Cabinet to empower communities to embrace their customs and foster unity amidst ongoing challenges, including the Islamist insurgency affecting the region. With nearly 70 languages spoken and a population that is religiously heterogeneous, the celebration serves to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity in Burkina Faso.
