Teachers' Day is observed in Colombia every May 15. This professional holiday was established in 1950, coinciding with Pope Pius XII's appointment of Jean-Baptiste de La Salle as the patron saint of teachers. De La Salle, known for his educational reforms and dedication to the education of poor children in France, founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. On this day, Colombian teachers receive congratulations and greeting cards from their students, and one of the most attended activities is a forum organized in the provinces. The holiday reflects the appreciation for educators and highlights the importance of free education, which De La Salle championed during his lifetime.
