Persian Language Day is observed in Iran every May 15, coinciding with the 25th of Ordibehesht in the Solar Hijri calendar. This official holiday was established to honor the Persian poet Ferdowsi, renowned for his epic poem, the Shahnameh, which is considered the national epic of the Iranian peoples. Ferdowsi's work, completed over three decades, is the longest epic poem by a single author and played a crucial role in reviving the Persian language from Arabic influence. The day was first commemorated as Ferdowsi Day in 1980 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the Shahnameh, and later, in 2016, it was suggested by the Academy of the Persian Language and Literature to also be recognized as Persian Language Day, gaining support from the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution. This celebration emphasizes the significance of the Persian language, also known as Farsi, which is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan.
