Savitri Amavasya is a day of fasting observed on the no moon day of the Hindu month of Jyestha, occurring in May or June. This festival is primarily celebrated in some states of North India, including Odisha, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh, as well as in Nepal. On this day, married Hindu women fast and pray for the long life of their husbands, viewing the fast as a religious vow. The observance is linked to the legend of Savitri and Satyavan from Hindu mythology, where Savitri's devotion and fasting are said to have saved her husband's life from the God of Death, Yama. Women typically maintain the fast, pray to Savitri, listen to the story of Savitri and Satyavan, and enjoy a feast after the fast is broken. Unmarried women may also participate in the fast to pray for a good husband.
