May 17: Book Day (Indonesia)

National Book Day, or Hari Buku Nasional, is observed in Indonesia every May 17. This celebration was initiated by the then Minister of National Education, Abdul Malik Fadjar, to promote literacy, reading, and support the publishing industry, coinciding with the founding anniversary of the National Library of Indonesia in 1980. The first celebration took place in 2002, and various events are organized by Indonesian publishers, bookstores, and cultural institutions, including book presentations, author meetings, poetry readings, and literary contests. Participants are encouraged to support local bookstores, join book clubs, and share their reading experiences on social media. The literacy rate in Indonesia has significantly improved since the inception of National Book Day, rising from nearly 87% in 1980 to 96% in 2020. Additionally, events promoting Indonesian literature are also held abroad, such as those organized by the National Library of Australia.
