May 20: Awakening Day (Indonesia)

National Awakening Day, or Hari Kebangkitan Nasional, is observed in Indonesia every year on May 20. This day commemorates the establishment of Budi Utomo, the first Indonesian nationalist group, founded in 1908 by Dr. Wahidin Soedirohoesodo. The organization, primarily composed of students from the School for the Training of Native Physicians (STOVIA), marked the beginning of the Indonesian National Awakening, which eventually led to the country's independence. Although not a public holiday, it holds significant importance for Indonesians and has been celebrated since the formal recognition of independence in 1948. In 2008, the day was also designated as Indonesian Doctor Day to honor the contributions of STOVIA students to the national movement. The observance serves as a reminder of the historical struggle for independence and the role of education in fostering nationalism.
