The modern craft distilling movement emerged from the microbrewing trend that began in the UK and spread to the US in the 1970s, leading to increased interest and experimentation in spirit production. Despite facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of microdistilleries in the US has grown significantly, from 50 in 2005 to over 2,000 by 2019.
