May 22: Girl Scout Day

Girl Scout Day is observed in Japan every May 22, celebrating the contributions of the Girl Scouts and their role in the community. The movement in Japan began in 1919, introduced by British missionary teacher Muriel Greenstreet, and the Girl Guides of Japan was officially formed in 1920. After a ban during World War II, the organization was reinstated in 1949 as the Girl Scouts of Japan, which became a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1952. As of 2018, there were over 28,000 Girl Scouts in Japan, focusing on self-development, human relations, and nature through activities such as working with the elderly and participating in environmental campaigns. Notable events include a significant celebration in 2000 for the 50th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of Tokyo and the 80th anniversary of the Japanese Girl Scouting movement, attended by Her Highness Princess Sayako.
