World Wrestling Day is celebrated worldwide every May 23 to commemorate the first Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships held in Vienna in 1904. This day is observed by amateur wrestlers globally and is marked by various wrestling competitions, workshops, and events aimed at popularizing the sport. Wrestling, one of the oldest forms of combat, has roots in prehistoric times and is documented in ancient texts such as the Old Testament and the Iliad. The modern style of wrestling, known as Greco-Roman, emerged in 1830s France and was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles, now known as United World Wrestling, was established in 1912 to govern amateur wrestling and oversee styles such as Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling. Notably, World Wrestling Day was established in 2014 by amateur wrestlers to promote the sport on an international scale.
