Aromanian National Day is observed worldwide on May 23 to commemorate the recognition of the Aromanians as a distinct millet within the Ottoman Empire in 1905. This day celebrates the Aromanian identity, which has evolved from their historical roots as part of the Romance ethnic groups in the Balkans, collectively known as the Vlachs during the Middle Ages. The Aromanian national consciousness began to develop in the 19th century amid rising Balkan nationalism, though it faced challenges due to the upper classes' identification with dominant regional nations. The day is particularly significant for pro-Romanian Aromanians residing in Albania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, and Romania, while it is not recognized by Aromanians in Greece. In 1991, various Aromanian organizations declared May 23 as Aromanian National Day, and North Macedonia officially recognized it as the "National Day of the Vlachs" in 2007, establishing it as a non-working holiday for Aromanian citizens.
