National Heroes Day is observed in the Turks and Caicos Islands on the last Monday in May. This public holiday commemorates J. A. G. S. McCartney, the first and only national hero of the territory, who was born on June 30, 1945. McCartney founded the People's Democratic Movement in 1975, advocating for self-determination and addressing economic and social issues that resonated with the local population. He became the first Chief Minister after the islands were granted self-government in 1976, making him one of the youngest democratically elected leaders in history. McCartney's tenure was tragically cut short when he died in a plane crash on May 9, 1980. To honor his legacy and achievements, National Heroes Day was established, allowing the community to celebrate his contributions to the islands.
