The date was established by a Presidential Decree from Boris Yeltsin in 1995, marking the anniversary of the Imperial Public Library in St. Petersburg, now known as the National Library of Russia. In Kyrgyzstan, the observance was officially established on June 17, 2008, with the first celebration taking place in 2009. Libraries Day aims to highlight the significant contributions of libraries to the cultural, scientific, and educational development of the nation. Various activities are organized to enhance the role of books in people's lives, emphasizing the importance of libraries in society.
