Mother's Day in Bolivia is observed every May 27, honoring the brave women who fought during the Battle of la Coronilla in 1812, a significant event in the Bolivian War of Independence. The holiday was established in 1927 by President Hernando Siles Reyes, with the date chosen to commemorate the women, children, and elderly who defended Cochabamba against the Spanish army using only sticks and stones. During the battle, many women were slaughtered while trying to protect their city. Although Mother's Day is not a festive occasion, schools and kindergartens hold various activities and festivities throughout the day to celebrate and remember these courageous women. The observance serves as a memorial to their sacrifice and bravery in the face of oppression.
