May 30: Steppe Day (Ukraine)

Steppe Day is observed in Ukraine every May 30, a holiday established in 2017 to highlight the importance of preserving the country's unique steppe landscapes, which cover over 40% of its territory. The Ukrainian steppe, part of the larger Eurasian Steppe, includes regions such as Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Dnipro, and parts of the Crimean Peninsula. The day was declared during an interregional scientific seminar focused on the protection of steppe landscapes in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. It aims to draw attention to the threats faced by these landscapes, particularly due to occupation by Russia and the conversion of land for agriculture. Various nature reserves, such as Askania-Nova and the Ukrainian Steppe Nature Reserve, have been established to protect the flora and fauna, which include species like irises, crocuses, and threatened animals such as the marbled polecat.
