Parinirvana Day is observed in Bhutan and Buddha Day in Mongolia, both commemorating the final state of Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) after his death. In Bhutan, the holiday is celebrated on the 15th day of the 4th month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar, while in Mongolia, it coincides with the 15th day of the first month of summer in the Tibetan calendar. On this day, Bhutanese Buddhists read passages from the Mahāyāna Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, visit monasteries, meditate, and reflect on mortality. In Mongolia, the day was declared a public holiday in 2019 to promote compassion, empathy, and kindness. Both celebrations highlight the significance of Buddhism in their respective cultures, with Bhutan practicing Vajrayana Buddhism and Mongolia primarily following the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Despite being similar to Vesak, the dates do not align due to differences in the calendars used.
