World Foster Day is observed worldwide every May 31. Established in 2018 by two organizations in Cape Town, South Africa, it aims to celebrate foster families and highlight the benefits of foster care for children and parents. The day emphasizes the importance of providing a safe and stable environment for vulnerable minors, who are placed in temporary care with foster families. Activities include sharing personal stories on social media, expressing appreciation for foster families, and engaging the community to promote the need for more foster homes. Participants can creatively represent family-based care by drawing smiley faces on their fingers and posting pictures online with the hashtag #WorldFosterDay. Additionally, some countries have their own observances, such as National Foster Care Day in the United States on the first Tuesday of May and Foster Care Day in Poland on May 30.
