June 1: Intergenerational Day (Canada)

Intergenerational Day Canada is observed on June 1 each year, celebrating the bonds between generations to combat social isolation, particularly among youth and the elderly. The day was initiated by Sharon MacKenzie, a teacher from British Columbia, who aimed to foster respect and healthy relationships between younger and older individuals. The inaugural celebration took place in 2010, chosen for its proximity to World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. The event is coordinated by the i2i Intergenerational Society Canada, founded by MacKenzie in 2008. Activities on this day include simple gestures like wishing someone well, visiting retirement homes, or spending time with family members from different generations. Over 100 cities and all 12 provinces and territories in Canada officially recognize this day, promoting the importance of intergenerational connections.
