National Go Barefoot Day, also known as National Barefoot Day, is observed worldwide every June 1. This holiday encourages people to walk barefoot to promote awareness of the plight of underprivileged children who lack proper footwear. It was established by the charity Soles4Souls (S4S) in response to the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, which left millions displaced and impoverished. The day serves to highlight the importance of shoes, as many children without them are unable to attend school and are at greater risk of injuries and diseases. Participants are encouraged to spend the day barefoot and share photos on social media using the hashtag #GoBarefootDay. In addition to walking barefoot, individuals can contribute by donating gently worn shoes to organizations like Soles4Souls or local shelters.
