Orthodox Whit Monday, also known as Pentecost Monday or Monday of the Holy Spirit, is celebrated worldwide, particularly in countries such as Cyprus, Greece, Romania, and Ukraine. It occurs every year the day after Pentecost, commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, which takes place fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, this day is marked as the afterfeast of Pentecost dedicated to God the Holy Spirit, and the liturgical services resemble those held on Pentecost. Folk traditions associated with this holiday include the Ukrainian custom of consecrating wells, believed to protect households from mermaids and evil spirits. While Whit Monday is recognized as a public holiday in some regions, it is not considered a religious holiday in the Catholic Church. The date varies each year, falling in either May or June.
