National Maritime Day, or Día de la Marina, is celebrated in Mexico every June 1. This civic holiday honors both the Mexican Navy and the country's civil maritime sectors. It was established in 1942 by President Manuel Ávila Camacho, with the date chosen to commemorate the first application of article 32 of the Mexican Constitution in 1917, which mandated that vessels flying the Mexican naval ensign be crewed by Mexican nationals. The holiday is marked by the flying of the Mexican flag at full staff by all branches of government. Celebrations are particularly vibrant in coastal towns and cities such as Veracruz, Acapulco, and Puerto Vallarta, featuring naval parades, singing, dancing, and fireworks.
