International Tourette’s Awareness Day is observed worldwide every June 7 to dispel misconceptions about Tourette syndrome, a common neurological disorder characterized by multiple tics. The day was established to address the misunderstandings and misrepresentations of the condition, which was first described by French neurologist George Gilles de la Tourette in 1885. People typically participate by wearing teal clothing or ribbons, sharing their experiences, and donating to organizations that support individuals with Tourette’s and their families. The awareness campaign coincides with Tourette’s Awareness Month, which runs from May 15 to June 15. Although Tourette’s was once considered rare, it is now estimated that about 1% of school-age children and adolescents are affected, with symptoms often subsiding as they age. Notably, coprolalia, the involuntary swearing associated with Tourette’s, affects only about 10% of patients.
