Journalist Day, or Día del Periodista, is observed in Argentina every June 7 to commemorate the founding of the Gazeta de Buenos Ayres, the first newspaper in the country, which began publication on this date in 1810. Established in 1938 by the First National Congress of Journalists in Córdoba, this professional holiday honors the contributions of journalists to society. The Gazeta de Buenos Ayres was created to inform the public about the activities of the Primera Junta and the laws during the Argentine War of Independence, with its first issue read aloud in chapels due to low literacy rates. Today, several journalist associations, including the Federación Argentina de Trabajadores de Prensa (FATPREN), participate in the celebration, which recognizes the vital role of journalism in democracy and public discourse.
