World Verdejo Day is observed worldwide every second Friday of June to celebrate the Verdejo grape variety, primarily grown in the Rueda region of Spain. This holiday was initiated in 2013 by wine enthusiasts from four U.S. cities and has since expanded into an international celebration led by D. O. Rueda in partnership with D. O. Ribera del Duero. Verdejo grapes, which were nearly extinct in the mid-20th century, are known for their aromatic, dry wines with pronounced acidity and floral notes. The wines are typically harvested at night to reduce oxidation, enhancing their lighter color and flavor. Celebrations include enjoying Verdejo wines, dining at Spanish restaurants, attending wine tastings, and sharing experiences on social media with the hashtag #WorldVerdejoDay. In 2022, promotional activities focused on regions such as Belgium, Canada, and the United Kingdom, among others.
