Memorial Day for the Victims of Repression is observed in Armenia every June 14. This remembrance day was proposed by the Armenian Revolutionary Front (Dashnaktsutyun), a socialist and nationalist political party, to honor the approximately 3,000 families forced to leave Armenia for Altai on this date in 1949, marking a significant event in the political repression that began in the late 1930s. Throughout the history of the Soviet Union, millions faced political repression, including many Armenians deported for their association with the Dashnaktsutyun Party. Additionally, numerous Armenian intellectuals and leaders were killed during the Great Purge, a campaign aimed at eliminating political opposition. On this day, Armenians participate in solemn remembrance ceremonies to honor the victims of political repression in the Soviet Union. This observance serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by the Armenian people during a tumultuous period in history.
