June 15: Megalodon Day

National Megalodon Day is observed worldwide every June 15 to celebrate the megalodon, one of the largest predators to have ever lived, whose tooth is the state fossil of North Carolina. Established by the Aurora Fossil Museum in 2021 to commemorate its opening anniversary, the day aims to educate the public about this extinct shark species. The megalodon, classified into the family Otodontidae, lived during the Miocene and Pliocene epochs and is estimated to have reached lengths of 46–67 feet. Celebrations may include visiting fossil museums, reading books, watching documentaries about the megalodon or other extinct species, and engaging in paleontology as a hobby. The Aurora Fossil Museum, which houses a significant collection of fossils, including megalodon remnants, features the shark's tooth on its emblem and promotes the day as a way to highlight its importance in marine history.
