June 16: Sussex Day (United Kingdom and Saint Richard’s Day)

Sussex Day, also known as Saint Richard’s Day, is observed every June 16 in the historic county of Sussex in South East England, which is divided into the ceremonial counties of East Sussex and West Sussex. This annual holiday celebrates the rich heritage and culture of Sussex, coinciding with the feast day of Saint Richard of Chichester, the patron saint of the region. The celebration includes flying the Sussex Flag, which features six gold martlets on a blue field, representing the six traditional subdivisions of Sussex known as rapes: Arundel, Bramber, Chichester, Hastings, Lewes, and Pevensey. Communities across Sussex engage in customs such as reading the Sussex Charter and singing “Sussex by the Sea,” a song considered the unofficial anthem of the county. The holiday was officially recognized in 2007, following the initiative of Worthing resident Ian Steedman and support from local politician Henry Smith.
