June 19: Kim Jong-il’s entry to the WPK Central Committee (North Korea)

Every June 19, North Koreans observe a public holiday celebrating Kim Jong-il's entry to the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee in 1964. This date marks the beginning of Kim Jong-il's political career following his graduation from Kim Il-sung University. The holiday, officially named “the day that the great leader Comrade Kim Jong-il started work at the Central Committee of the Worker’s Party of Korea,” was recognized as a national holiday in 2015. It serves to commemorate Kim Jong-il's contributions and is part of an effort to formalize the narrative of his “revolutionary history.” Kim Jong-il was the Supreme Leader of North Korea from 1994 to 2011 and was born to Kim Il-sung, the founder of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
