June 23: Fitness and Sports Day (Armenia)

Fitness and Sports Day, also known as Physical Culture Day, is observed in Armenia every June 23. This holiday was officially established in 2009 by the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, along with then-vice prime minister Armen Gevorgyan, to honor the achievements of Armenian athletes and promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle among young people. The date was chosen to coincide with Olympic Day, which commemorates the establishment of the International Olympic Committee in 1894. Armenia has a notable Olympic history, first participating in the Games in 1952 as part of the Soviet Union and later as an independent nation starting in 1994. As of 2018, Armenian Olympians have won a total of 14 medals at the Summer Games, including 2 gold, 6 silver, and 6 bronze.
