The day marks the historical moment when the first UPC-marked item, a ten-piece pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum, was scanned at a Marsh Supermarkets location in Troy, Ohio, in 1976. Participants celebrate by learning about the history and various applications of barcodes, which are now integral in sectors such as retail, healthcare, and logistics.
