Canadian Multiculturalism Day is observed in Canada on June 27 each year. This day honors the diverse racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds that make up Canadian society. The significance of the relationship between British and French heritage is acknowledged, as these groups form a substantial part of the population; however, approximately 40% of modern Canadians have origins beyond these two groups due to various waves of immigration. The day was established on November 13, 2002, and was officially designated by the Government of Canada through Royal Proclamation. It celebrates the commitment to democracy, mutual respect, and equality, while also recognizing the contributions of various ethnic groups to the nation. The Canadian Multiculturalism Act of 1988 and other related legislation, such as the Broadcasting Act of 1991, emphasize the importance of preserving and reflecting this multicultural identity in Canadian society.
