Constitution Day is observed in Ukraine every June 28, commemorating the anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of Ukraine in 1996. This holiday marks the transition from the Constitution of the Ukrainian SSR, which was the supreme law until 1995, to a new constitution for an independent Ukraine. The first constitution was adopted during an overnight parliamentary session on June 27-28, 1996, and took effect immediately upon announcement by the Parliament. Although Constitution Day is the only public holiday explicitly stated in the constitution, many Ukrainians view it as an additional day off, with about 10% believing it should be a working day. The holiday is particularly respected in Western Ukraine, highlighting its significance in the national identity.
