RONPhos Handover Day is observed in Nauru every July 1 and is dedicated to the Republic of Nauru Phosphate Corporation (RONPhos), the country's leading enterprise. This public holiday was established in 2017 to celebrate the phosphate industry, which has played a significant role in Nauru's economic history. Phosphate was first discovered on the island in the early 20th century, and after gaining independence in 1968, Nauruans purchased the rights to the phosphate business from Australia, leading to a period of remarkable economic growth. However, the depletion of phosphate deposits and subsequent economic challenges resulted in the restructuring of the phosphate corporation in 2005.
