Battle of Chesma Day is observed in Russia every July 7, commemorating the victory of the Russian Empire over the Ottoman Empire in 1770 during the Russo-Turkish War. This naval battle, fought in Çeşme Bay (present-day Turkey), was part of the Orlov Revolt, a Greek uprising led by Count Orlov, who commanded the Russian Navy. The battle lasted from July 5 to July 7, resulting in a decisive Russian victory despite being outnumbered, with the Ottomans losing 15 ships, 6 frigates, and approximately 11,000 men. This victory significantly boosted confidence in the Russian fleet and temporarily secured Russian control over the Aegean Sea. Although not a public holiday, it is recognized as a Day of Military Honor, a designation made by President Boris Yeltsin, highlighting its importance in Russian military history.
