Fish Farmers Day is observed in Tajikistan every second Sunday of July, celebrating the contributions of fish farm workers to the nation's economy. Established by the government, this holiday highlights the significance of fish farming, or pisciculture, which involves the commercial breeding of freshwater and marine fish. Historically, during the Soviet era, Tajikistan had several large fish farms that produced significant quantities of fish, but the industry faced decline after the Soviet Union's collapse. Recent years have seen a revival, supported by state programs, with 16 large and 372 mid-sized fish farms currently operational. However, challenges such as a lack of qualified personnel and the need for imported fish feed persist. On this day, fish farmers receive recognition for their hard work, with distinguished individuals awarded bonuses and gifts, and celebrations typically occur on the preceding Friday or the following Monday.
