Lempira Day is observed in Honduras every July 20 and is dedicated to the indigenous leader of the Lenca people, Lempira, who led a resistance against Spanish conquistadors in the 1530s. Despite his efforts to unite around 30,000 people against the Spanish, Lempira was ultimately killed, leading to the surrender of the Lenca. He is regarded as a national hero, with the currency of Honduras and one of its departments named after him, and his image appears on the 1 lempira note. Although not a public holiday, Lempira Day is widely celebrated, particularly in schools, where children dress as indigenous Hondurans and present various ethnic groups. This day serves not only to honor Lempira but also to celebrate indigenous culture and heritage in Honduras.
