Pioneer Day is observed in the U.S. state of Utah every July 24 to commemorate the arrival of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon settlers in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The holiday celebrates the establishment of a settlement that would later become Salt Lake City. Pioneer Day originated in 1849 to mark the second anniversary of this significant event and includes parades, rodeos, fireworks, and various festivities. Although the celebration has a long history, it has faced criticism for its ties to the LDS Church, prompting some Utahns to celebrate an alternative known as Pie and Beer Day. This alternative holiday, which plays on the name "pioneer," is intended to be lighthearted and not offensive to those who observe the traditional Pioneer Day.
