The International Day for Women and Girls of African Descent, also known as International Afro-descendant Women’s Day, is observed worldwide every July 25. This day commemorates the contributions and experiences of Afro-descendant women and addresses the unique challenges they face due to compounded discrimination based on both gender and race. The origins of this observance trace back to a historic meeting of 300 Afro-descendant women from 32 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, held in the Dominican Republic in 1992, which led to the establishment of the Afro-Latin, Afro-Caribbean and Diaspora Women’s Network. Celebrations often include events organized by Black women and feminist groups, such as the Festival Latinidades in Brazil, which features a diverse program of conferences, workshops, and performances. The day aims to highlight the struggles against racial discrimination, sexism, and poverty faced by these women while promoting policies to improve their quality of life. The observance has gained support from various organizations within the UN system, including the UNESCO Chair in Education for Social Justice.
