War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day, also known as Remembrance Day, is observed in Vietnam every July 27. This memorial day honors Vietnamese military personnel who died or were injured during military engagements, both domestically and abroad. The observance dates back to the First Indochina War when the Democratic Republic of Vietnam sought to recognize the contributions of wounded soldiers and support their families. In 1946, organizations were established to assist these servicemen and their families, leading to the selection of July 27 as National War Invalids Day in 1947, a decision backed by Ho Chi Minh. After the Vietnam War and the reunification of Vietnam in 1976, the holiday was expanded to honor not only veterans but also those recognized for their meritorious service during the revolutionary struggle. Commemorations include wreath-laying ceremonies at military cemeteries, exhibitions, cultural performances, and volunteer efforts to maintain war memorials.
